FARM: Ruera Estate

BEHIND PRODUCTION
Ruera Estate belongs to a new wave of progressive Kenyan farms willing to experiment with natural processing, a method still relatively rare in the country. Each harvest undergoes careful selection, with ripe cherries dried slowly on raised beds under controlled conditions. The result is a deeper fruit character and amplified sweetness, without compromising the clarity and structure that define Kenyan coffees.
LOCATION
Nestled just north of Nairobi, Kiambu is one of Kenya’s oldest and most fertile coffee-growing regions. Its red volcanic soil, coupled with the cool climate and reliable rainfall, creates the perfect microclimate for slow cherry maturation. Ruera Estate, situated at 1.550m, is part of a landscape where tradition meets modern agronomy, preserving the integrity of Kenyan cup profiles while exploring new processing frontiers.

Kenya Ruera Estate arrived to our roastery via EL CAFÉ, a company established in 2000 by Vasileios G. Anastasopoulos that is solely concerned in the coffee producing countries with discovering new coffee varieties on special farms.

Since then they supplie most of the largest coffee producing companies in Greece, by remaining as a dedicated green coffee import and trading company.

Varietals & Process This lot features a balanced mix of Kenya’s most iconic and resilient varieties: SL28 – celebrated for its bold acidity and longevity, Ruiru 11 – disease-resistant and rich in body, Batian – a newer hybrid offering both productivity and flavor, K7 – less common, but prized for cup brightness.

The natural process employed here allows the full sugar content of the cherry to infuse the bean during drying. Careful rotation and attention on the beds ensure uniformity and cleanliness in the cup—a bold yet elegant alternative to Kenya’s traditional washed lots.
